Yosemite + iOS 8 : What Architects Need to Know

Architects work in imagery. They are either designing it, documenting it or photographing it. For that last one, the tool that many architects now use is their iPhone.

With the recent updates to the Apple's operating systems, iOS 8 on the iPhone and OS X 10.10 or "Yosemite" for the Mac, there are many new and or revised features that affect how architects use these tools.

Austin Mann is a professional photographer and has complied an extensive list in an article title, "Yosemite + iOS 8.1: What Photographers Need to Know." Although Austin focus is for photographers many of the tips and features he highlights are applicable for architects as well and everyone should give Austin's post a read.

Should you upgrade?

When a new version of an operating system is released, like the recent iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite updates from Apple, the first question we should ask ourselves is, "should I upgrade?"

As architects, we enjoy exploring and using all the new and useful features that these updates offer. Though the temptation is strong, I caution against doing so right away.

I would recommend that you first update a second Mac and use that as a test machine. Make sure to run all you apps through their paces and check with each software developer on compatibility with the new OS's. Also, never, and I repeat never upgrade your main Mac while you're in the process of completing construction documents or before giving a presentation. Like texting while driving, it can wait.

For more questions you should be asking yourself and tips on how to proceed, Marilyn over at mac-fusion has written an excellent summary titled, "Should you Upgrade?" that I recommend checking out.

Have you upgraded to iOS 8 and or OS X Yosemite? Have you experienced issues or has it been smooth sailing? Let us know in the comments.

At the October Event, Apple introduced the iPad Air 2 (pre-orders on October 17, shipping on October 24), iMac with Retina 5K display (available now), Mac mini (available now), iOS 8.1 (available October 20th, including support for ApplePay), OS X Yosemite (available now) along with several other products.
